Exclusive Interview - The Agents Sit Down With Kate Champion!
1. Okay, Kate. Tell me. Why do you think people have such a strong reaction to your story?
Maybe because it scares people? There is existential horror in the idea that someone can have it all and still feel empty. No one wants to hear that having a perfect family, financial abundance, a doting husband, a beautiful house – a steady hold on the criteria for which we measure success and happiness – might possibly leave a person feeling incomplete.
2. Do you think it would be the same if the roles were reversed? For example, Robert falling in love with a younger girl?
There is no comparison. Words used to describe older women falling in love with younger men are always predatory – vixen – cougar – black widow – blood sucker – there are a million and they’re always negative – they connote stealing – life sucking –manipulating – taking advantage. For men the stigma doesn’t exist. Older men that date younger women are – old fashioned – gentlemanly – benevolent, at worst – living in the past, refusing to grow up. Women in the older partner role are seen as mentally unstable – Demi Moore – Madonna, men in the same role, George Clooney – are charming.
3. Do you think society dislikes strong women in general? You know, women who dare to do things that men have done since the beginning of time...
Well, there are definitely unspoken rules about how women should behave. If we are assertive –we are bitches. Assertive men are ‘powerful.’ If we choose to work instead of taking care of our families we are selfish. Men who do the same are ‘sacrificing’ for their families. If we seek out sex we are sluts. Men who do the same are simply being ‘men.’ If we cheat we are overstepping the boundaries of what being a ‘good woman’ means. When men cheat they are merely responding to their ‘nature.’
4. If you could go back and change anything that you have done - what would it be and why?
I can’t go back, Autumn. I can’t change who I’ve become. I don’t want to. Jaylee happened for a reason. This is something that I have to believe.
5. What is your greatest wish for the future?
That my girls learn to live their lives as their authentic selves – that they always feel the freedom to be who they truly are. That Jaylee is granted a second chance. That all three of them experience a love some day that teaches them what it means to be unequivocally free.
